Tis the Season - For Floor Expansion and Contraction

Whether you have vinyl, laminate, engineered or hardwood all floor coverings experience movement throughout the Canadian seasons. Why? Almost all building materials are made of earth natural elements; fibers, wood particles, stone etc... and these materials need to have a relative equilibrium throughout the year for optimal performance.

During the winter season, the most important thing is humidity control. How? Start by investing in a $20 humidistat to tell you the reading of your home. You can't fix something if you can't measure it. If you are sitting below 35% humidity, the home is too dry and the flooring will shift causing minor splits, cracks, creaking etc... Turn on the furnaces humidity. If you don't have a furnace equipped with one, get a portable humidifier that is appropriate for the home's square footage.

Tip: Don’t forget to adjust the humidity levels once the warmer days approach, if you are close to or surpass 55%, you need to decrease the percentage with a dehumidifier or home air circulation.

Maintain the homes humidity between 35% - 55% year round
